Canadians send message to G20 in recent Toronto violence

This seems timely but its nice to see Canadians telling off the G20 a little more directly ...

Police in riot gear and protesters continued to clash Saturday evening following a massive anti-G20 protest march through downtown Toronto in which at least three police vehicles were set ablaze, store and bank windows smashed, and much of the area put under security lockdowns.

Shortly before 8 p.m., a police vehicle that had been damaged earlier in the day on Queen Street, just east of Spadina, was torched. Police in riot gear descended on the burning wreckage to push people back.

Police cruisers were torched earlier at the corner of King and Bay streets in the heart of the city's financial district, sending plumes of black smoke into the air. At one point, as one vehicle burned, protesters surrounded police officers who were trying to protect the car, CBC reporter Amber Hildebrandt reported on Twitter.

The size of the protest crowd was estimated to be as high as 10,000. Witnesses said tear gas had been used in the area around the provincial legislature at College and University, but police denied any had been used in the city.

Is this another case of those tricky anarchists breaking off from a largely peaceful protest and burning shit up? I guess it shows the anger a lot of people are feeling at the moment.

It's the violence that stops people listening to what the protest is about, they just see thugs running amuck!!!! shame really that thats what will be remembered and not the reasons for it!!! shame on those who turned violent and who burned and smashed they place up!!!

I was there. I got detained. I cooperated, they let me go. I think the police did an excellent job, for the most part though there were some abuses of power that will likely go unpunished. The part that pisses me off is that they spent a billion on the G20 to have it in toronto when they could've had the meeting out on some guy's farm 100 times cheaper. Stupid, stupid waste of money. People are often unaware of what they're attacking in regards to the G20. The G20 is amoral and necessary, the problem are the massive business conglomerates who get the most say, which they reserve for their own interests to the detriment of others (bildeburg, tri-lateral) and that could definitely be called morally sound by technicality alone but not morally sound due to the ignorance of the indirect effects of their policies on the most vulnerable. This ignorance gies them a buffer zone to increase profits. A violent protest isn't a protest, it's pathetic guerilla warfare by the untrained and a cowardly release of aggression. They should have been lynched by the non-violent protesters. That'd be the epidome of irony. As for the "police state", I personally find one occasion to be an exaggeration of everyday life and I didn't find it to be an example of oppression anywhere near the levels experienced in genuinely oppressed countries.

First off, good on you young man, glad to hear you were there.

Let me highlight some things I think that are particularly important.

1. there were some abuses of power that will likely go unpunished.

Personally I have no problem with subway or starbucks being smashed, corporations deserve worse, like the ceos heads chopped off.

Whether the police action in TO is right or wrong has nothing to do with how police act in other countries.

A wife beater is not a good person because they arent a serial killer.

If the cops do something wrong, STRING THEM UP!
