What's the bar under computer desks for?

Why is there a piece of wood under some computer desks that goes from one side to the other and is attached to a leg of the desk on either side? Is it there to strengthen the structure of the desk so removing it would make the desk more likely to collapse, or is it there just in case people want to rest their feet on it?

It's called a modesty panel.

Perhaps modesty panels could have nozzles on them or something, operated by a pedal, and if anyone tried to look underneath or over the top, the person at the desk could put their foot on the pedal and it would make the nozzles squirt water at them like a water pistol would.

Even being squirted with water wouldn't stop me. The water would dry off soon enough, but the visual memories would last forever. Perhaps acid instead of water!

No, what they could do is squirt a brightly-coloured dye onto the people looking, that wouldn't wash off. So they'd have to walk around with people thinking,

I know what you've been doing.

Yeah, now you're talkin'! While they might not care what strangers think, the wife is a different matter.

I would even go so far as to incorporate a computer operated jet stream like in a printer that would target the peeker's forehead. It would write something like, "I got caught," or "wife be damned." That would definitely make me think twice. But who knows where my third thought would take me.

Maybe they could have it specially programmed so it could recognise second-time offenders and spray a more embarrassing message on them, such as, "I try to look up skirts on the boss's time".

As for third time offenders, the message could be even worse. ...
