My off-topic tangent room

This is my new off-topic tangent room. It's for everything that people want to say in other threads that isn't strictly relevant to the topic they're posting in. They can say it here instead. The rule is that people quote the remark they're commenting on, link back to the page of the thread the quote came from, saying which thread it is, and then they say what they'd like to say about it that would go off-topic if it was in that thread.

Also, it would be good etiquette for them to inform the person whose quote they're commenting on that they're doing it, perhaps via PM, or by putting a note in the thread they're quoting from as a reply to the person they're quoting, informing them briefly that there's a comment on what they said in the Off-topic tangent room.

The comments will be required to have at least something of quality about them. If they're just plain insults, they should go in Symptom's Insult Room instead.

But one thing my off-topic tangent room can be used for is if a thread starts to degenerate into personal attacks, as so many do. What can happen from now on is that one of the participants can say to the person they're duelling with: "Let's take this to the off-topic tangent room. I've made a comment about what you said there. I'll see you there. But let's bring this thread back to the issues." Then, threads can get back to discussing the issues they were meant to be about, and the personal duels can be siphoned off into here.

Also, if someone wants to put a message in a thread that partly discusses the issues and partly says something off-topic, perhaps about the person they're addressing, they can comment on the issues, and where they would have made the off-topic comments in their post, they can link to this thread and say there are off-topic remarks here. An example would be the jokes I made in a Politics thread not too long ago amid comments I made in an otherwise serious discussion when talking to Mister Agenda, about him and Dragon being the same person, and about him taking magical Harry Potter-style long-distance smacking lessons.

So enjoy.

New? And it sounds as if you've been watching too many films coming out of Hollywood. Well, maybe not; But in any case, I think they're partly what gives America a bad image. I bet it's easy to get the impression that America is a place full of psychopaths if you watch too many of those, or even just hear too many creepy voiceovers on the radio advertising them. Hollywood doesn't do America any favours, since I'm sure part of the reason America has a bad image in the world is because of the violent films that come out of it.

I read a book once about a Muslim teenager living in Uganda in the early 1970s who was forced to leave with his family because Asians were expelled, and they were offered a place in America; and he said he was under the impression that America was a land full of violence, because of the programmes he'd seen on television. His family were given a place to live in Minneapolis, and he thought the word meant "many police" because of all the violence. Nowadays, films and programmes coming out of America are probably a whole lot worse! So Hollywood and other programme-making places might be partly responsible for hatred of America in the world.

Of course, if they changed or were closed down, people would still feel the same way if they were just exposed to America's news. People who put news together always dredge up the worst possible things they can. Even if there's loads of heart-warming news around, most news producers ignore it because they think it won't be interesting enough, so they put forward a warped one-sided view of things. In countries where the press is censored, a country can avoid giving itself a bad reputation by putting out its bad news, since it can keep it hidden, which further skews the impression people in such countries can get.

America's media would probably be doing America a few favours if it tried to put forward a more balanced view.

You must know by now that I'm not in the habit of going quietly. Nor am I in the habit of going quickly if I can help it.

However, if you look at my goodbye thread, you'll discover I posted in there today saying I'd changed my mind; I'd decided to just adopt a couple of expedient measures instead of leaving altogether, like starting this thread, to reduce warning-worthy off-topic material on the rest of the board.

After all, the fact that I haven't been kicked out yet gives me the impression that I've got more leeway to do things than I thought I might have when I said goodbye. ... Of course, this might be the last post I ever put on here, because I might discover I haven't after all when I do get thrown out in a minute. We'll see. Perhaps I'll say goodbye again to you now, just in case I never speak to you again.

New?
I assume you are talking about the name of the thread.

So yes, as opposed to the old who would you vote for thread.

I thought since the situation was different, and we know better who the candidates are, we should have a new vote. This is the old who would you vote for thread, and you can see there is quite a change of opinion and candidates.

Easily self-amused.

Now stop spamming my thread! This isn't just for any old off-topic thing, but for comments that would otherwise send other threads off-topic.

You smile in every single thread, I thought it superfluous to make any reference.

That's fine Meme, I see I'm not wanted here.

Carry on with your legitimate tangents.

From an awful trashy thread here: http://www.frostcloud.com/forum/show...t=16579&page=2

Oh, spot the irony! Yep, everyone in this day and age knows the sun rises and falls like an aeroplane taking off and coming to land somewhere else, since that's the latest in scientific understanding.

Actually, I personally doubt it does so every day. I think it gets a bit lazy in the winter. Perhaps it hibernates, much like some animals. If only someone could reprogramme it not to! It would make people feel more cheerful if it came out more often. Perhaps if it shone more brightly, it would warm and brighten itself up sufficiently that it didn't feel the need to hibernate in the winter, so we wouldn't have these problems. Does anyone have any ideas on how we could warm up the sun to see if that works?

------

Actually, Musicman, you did make about the only good point in that thread in your previous post.

I said that thread was trashy before playing the video it was about. Now I have, it puts it into perspective a bit. Yuck! A bit unsettling really. People really ought to think through issues a bit before they campaign about them!

Hey 0ddity, why don't you link to your Youtube thingy in your signature any more? I was thinking of one day investigating what you and others said, out of curiosity.
