    I wrote this for school

The controversies of Wicca and Shamanism the like have been long since feared in many cultures; many play it off and laugh as if the practitioner is playing some game and fantasizing their adventure while others just straight out fear it. Though I am not writing on Wicca my subject and it share a lot in common, ritual and plant usage is prominent in both religions. Shamans frequently work with animals, animal spirits, totems, etc. They also play an important role in the village or tribe they live in. Native American Shamans were used to heal those in need and keep the tribe safe; while the Shamans in Africa called ‘Witch doctors’ are closely related keep the tribe safe and heal but work more with spirits rather animals.

Though both cultures do things out of the normal there is nothing to fear if you are on the good side of the practitioner, Shamans are said to possess powers to harm as well. The Egyptians put spells on their tombs cursing those who dare to open them, clumsy little archaeologists open them up and die a few years later mysteriously; imagine that. Most Shamans do not find pleasure in cursing random people and have lived long enough to be out of the immature ‘evil’ phase which normally comes in the early teen years.

The path to being a Shaman is a rough one and not everyone can be a Shaman, they usually endure a life or death experience. There are a lot of things you must do to achieve the goal of a Shaman; some Sorcerers in Africa think that you don’t really start learning until your sixty but here, that is not the case. You first need to go on a spiritual journey, (if it is your calling) and find your spiritual guide. Some cultures use psychedelic mushrooms or peyote to experience a hallucinated state and see the possible guides of the practitioner, this I do not recommend. However once you reach a highly meditative state your guide will find you drug induced or not. Throughout your path you will learn about herbs and plants and use them effectively in your potions and medicines. This may sound ineffective but, some Shamans say they sit by the plant and ‘feel’ what it is telling them and what it can be used for.

Sad to say but there are a lot of scams out there to trick those who would like to endure this state of mind and soul but it is not their calling. In my research I have found a lot of places that asked for money to talk to someone that has hypothetical experience in the supernatural. It sucks on multiple levels, people are trying to be something their not and others are humoring it. Wasted money and time, false information and way too many people thinking they know something that doesn’t exist. I can add that without guidance I would have no idea where to go either. Therefore on a basic level people shouldn’t try this without a ‘real’ calling.

To conclude these thoughts; do not fear the unknown, just leave it be. Just because others are different than yourself doesn’t mean you have the right to express your opinion as if it is the only true one on the planet. Shamans don’t want to hurt you if you don’t want to hurt them for the most part, in fact most of them would rather help if you are open to what they do or would rather you not bother them.
